The Independent Living Skills Program - Educational Corner

Children's Eye Safety Program

"Care about Children's Eyes" is an educational program about eye health and safety for children. This interactive program includes a:

  • video about eye health and safety
  • discussion and demonstration on environmental hazards (including sports)
  • lesson on the various eye colors
  • group activity using the different types of eye movements
  • final discussion on why eyes are so special

A packet of educational information is distributed to the teachers as well as to each child to bring home to his/her parents. Topics include:

  • Preventing eye accidents in the home
  • Signs of possible eye trouble in children
  • Ten hazards to children's eyes
  • Eye safety tips
  • First aid for eye emergencies
  • Children's eye problems
  • "Eye Q" test.

Goals

The goals of "Care About Children's Eyes" are to teach children about eye safety, how to prevent eye injury and to provide parents and teachers with information on eye safety and children's eye problems.

Objectives

  • Inform children why their eyes are special
  • Teach children safety rules which will protect their eyes from injury
  • Instruct children on how to take care of their eyes
  • Teach children how to protect their eyes from the sun
  • Identify objects in the school and home that may be dangerous to their eyes
  • Inform children on the dangers of sharp and pointed objects and certain household products.
  • Teach children how to protect their eyes when playing sports
  • Inform children on why people wear glasses
  • Inform parents how they can help to protect their child's vision.
